Fool's Gambit & Fool's Hope

Construction History

A relic from the Clone Wars, the Marauder-Class Corvette was a fast attack ship designated affectionately as a "pocket cruiser". In reality, the ship's sturdy design and uncanny maneuverability was limited by its comparatively light firepower and armament. After serving as a patrol vessel through the Clone Wars, the Marauder-Class was quietly retired by the Galactic Empire. Sienar Fleet Systems, recently reorganized under the Empire's rule, sold the design to the Corporate Sector Authority, where the ship was modified and saw further action.

The ship, eventually, found purchase with criminals and eventually the fledgling Rebel Alliance.

After the end of the Rebellion at the Battle of Yavin IV, and the formation of the New Republic, the Marauder-Class was quietly adopted by a variety of planetary entities and private security forces where it has continued heavy use. It has been hailed as a reliable ship that is easy and inexpensive to repair, as well as cheaply produced and maintained.

—"Capture them?! But sir! They're ancient!." - The Redemption's Captain to Drake Rylan. —

Capture and Refitting

On his way to Yavin, Drake Rylan brought The Redemption from the hyperspace and was immediately thrown in the midst of a conflict with Republic Patrol Forces against a small pirate fleet consisting of a battered Bulk Cruiser and two Marauder-Class Corvettes. The Redemption's arrival turned the course of the battle and soon ended the conflict. Capturing the surviving Marauder-Class Corvettes, Rylan had them towed to Mon Calamari to be re-fitted and upgraded.

As a result of the action and the crippling of the Patrol Force's craft, the crew were officially absorbed into Rylan's budding Task Force and transferred to the Marauder-Class Corvettes while they underwent repairs and refitting at Mon Calamari shipyards. Bollig Thinsand, a Chief Engineer with the Mon Calamari and dear friend to Drake Rylan, consulted with him in the repairs and modifications the Marauder-Class could benefit. The result was a massive layover while the ship was outfitted and the crew were trained on the ship's primary systems.

Refits

Aging operational systems were pulled from the ships entirely, replaced with their modern counterparts. The hull was repaired and the shield's upgraded, playing on the ship's already solid reputation for taking extreme amounts of punishment for its size. The weaponry was replaced, old systems scrapped for parts with more modern batteries put in their place. New Technology favored the Marauder's aging design, allowing it to carry additional batteries due to their compact size. The ship's engines were upgraded and replaced.

The ship's power supplies provided the greatest challenge for refit, aged and far too small to maintain the ship's upgraded engines and systems. As a resort, the Marauder's aging power conduits and supplies were ripped out entirely and reformed with state of the art Calamarian units, spread sequentially throughout the hull with the two main units installed in place of the ancient, old main reactor.

As is present in all Mon Calamari designs, these ships show the ability to take the same brutal punishment with little recourse to function or performance.
